The service life of latex-modifiedconcrete and low-slump dense concrete bridge deckoverlays is estimated by extrapolating historicalperformance data obtained from the results of fieldresearch and investigations conducted in the UnitedStates and Canada. The data suggest that when concreteremoval criteria are based on half-cell potentialrather than actual damage, when removal of chloridecontaminated concrete is extended to below the rebar,and when the substrate is sandblasted to removemicrocracking prior to cleaning, a mean service life of30 to 50 years is likely.
