Whilst This Standard is intended to relate primarily to machined surfaces, it should be appreciated that the grading of surface texture s in fact essentially geometrical measurement, and the principles laid down may therefore be applied to surfaces other than machined surfaces in cases where the application of the standard would appear to be useful. This Standard includes recommendations regarding: ther terminology to be employed in statements relating to surface texture; the instruments and methods to be employed in assessing British Standard index numbers for surface texture; preferred limits for the grading of surface texture by means of index numbers; and the symbols to be employed in stating surface texture requirements on drawings; together with a number of appendices containing brief accounts of some of the main considerations on which the recommendations are based, and other relevant information.
