Full Description

1.1 This Standard states the construction, test, and marking requirements covering the safety of single and multiple coaxial and coaxial/optical-fiber cables for thedistribution of radio-reception and television-reception signals from a community antenna or a cable-TV company and for supplying low-energy power at a potentialnot exceeding 60 volts to equipment directly associated with the signal distribution. These are power-limited cables and are of the following types for installation anduse as the CATV cables specified in Article 820 and other applicable parts of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70. Electrically nonconductive materialseparates each optical-fiber member from the rest of the cable. The order in which the NEC accepts these cables as substitutes for one another is shown in (e).
1.PLENUM CABLES - Type CATVP (coaxial) and Type CATVP-OF (coaxial/optical-fiber). These cables are for installation as specified in Section 820-51(a) of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70-1996) in a duct, plenum, or other space used to transport environmental air without the cable being enclosed in raceway in that space.
2.RISER CABLES - Type CATVR (coaxial) and Type CATVR-OF (coaxial/optical-fiber). These cables are for installation as specified in Section 820-51(b) of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70-1996) in vertical runs in a shaft or for vertical runs that penetrate more than one floor.
3.GENERAL-PURPOSE CABLES - Type CATV (coaxial) and Type CATV-OF (coaxial/optical-fiber). These cables are general-applications commercial cables for use as specified in Section 820-51(c) of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70-1996). General applications do not include plenum or riser use.
4.LIMITED-USE CABLES - Type CATVX (coaxial) and Type CATVX-OF (coaxial/optical-fiber). As specified in Section 820-51(d) and Exceptions 1 - 4 to Section 820-53(c) of the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA 70-1996), these cables are limited to installation within buildings in raceway or in nonconcealed spaces in which the exposed length of cable does not exceed 10 ft or 3.05 m. The NEC does not apply these limits to Type CATVX and Type CATVX-OF cables that are smaller in diameter than 0.375 inch or 9.52 mm and are installed either within 1- or 2-family dwellings or in nonconcealed spaces within multiple-family dwellings.
5.HIERARCHY:
-1.Type CATVP qualifies as Types CATVR, CATV, and CATVX.
-2.Type CATVP-OF qualifies as Types CATVR-OF, CATV-OF, and CATVX-OF
-3.Type CATVR qualifies as Types CATV and CATVX.
-4.Type CATVR-OF qualifies as Types CATV-OF and CATVX-OF.
-5.Type CATV qualifies as Type CATVX.
-6.Type CATV-OF qualifies as Type CATVX-OF.
